Finding Strength This Easter: Leaning into His Sufficiency
Apr 18, 2025Easter is a time of reflection, celebration, and profound hope. It is an opportunity to remember the immense sacrifice Jesus made, a sacrifice born of love that conquered death itself. As a survivor of abuse, you may carry burdens that can feel impossibly heavy. You’ve learned to be strong, to be vigilant, to rely on your own ability to navigate the complexities and protect yourself (and your children). This self-reliance, while often necessary for survival, can sometimes become a lonely and exhausting fortress.
This Easter, we want to remind you that you do not have to carry your burden alone. There is a different path: the path of leaning into Jesus' sufficiency.
Think about the cross. Jesus, in His humanity, endured unimaginable pain and suffering. He didn't rely on earthly power or self-preservation during that experience. In the gospels we see His fear and distress. Yet, He entrusted Himself to His Father's will, a will ultimately leading to resurrection and victory.
For survivors striving to prevent further harm, there is a powerful instinct to control and manage every situation. You might build walls, analyze every word of your husband, try to anticipate every potential threat. While wisdom and safety planning are crucial, carrying the sole weight of preventing future abuse can become an unbearable burden.
Easter reminds you that you don't have to carry everything alone. When you hear the Easter story, you may think of salvation and the forgiveness of your sins. But Jesus' sacrifice for past redemption; He also offers present strength and future hope. His sufficiency is a wellspring you can draw from, a strength that surpasses your own limitations.
Leaning into His sufficiency doesn't mean abandoning wise choices or safety measures. It means releasing the need to be completely in control, to carry the entire responsibility for preventing future abuse. It means finding solace and strength in prayer, in connecting with a community of Christians, and in trusting that God's grace is sufficient for each moment.
