Finding Your True Independence: A Reflection for Christian Survivors on the Fourth of July

christian marriage help survivor hope Jun 29, 2024

As fireworks paint the night sky this Fourth of July, we celebrate freedom. But for some of us, the idea of freedom feels distant, a flickering flame instead of a blazing bonfire. If you have experienced domestic abuse, you might be carrying the weight of a relationship that has stolen your sense of safety and peace.

The enemy may have whispered lies, making you believe you deserved the abuse, that God wouldn't understand, that no one would believe you, that to be a "good Christian" you have to stay & submit. But dear sister, that's a deception. God created you for freedom – freedom to live a life filled with love, respect, and joy. (Galatians 5:1). When a woman is unsafe in her own home with a husband who is unrepentant, oneness is replaced with oppression and bondage. That is not what God wants for any of his precious daughters.

This holiday, let's reflect on the freedom we find in Him. Here are some reminders to hold close:

  •  You are fearfully and wonderfully made. The abuser's actions don't define you. God created you in His image, worthy of love and respect. So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God he created them. Genesis 1:27
  • Your strength comes from God. You are not alone in this battle. Draw on His strength to face each day. I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
  • God sees your pain. He understands your suffering and offers comfort. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
  • There is hope for healing. With God's help and support, you can rebuild your life. ...to comfort all who mourn and provide for those who grieve...to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair... Isaiah 61:2-3

Remember, freedom isn't just the absence of an abuser. It's the freedom to:

  • Live authentically: Pursue your passions, dreams, and interests.
    • As you grow in your healing journey, you'll begin to remember who you are and find the strength and courage to engage in things that bring you joy.
  • Set healthy boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your well-being.
    • The Oasis Bible Study - Book 1 has several chapters that will help you gain the confidence and skills to do this
  • Love and be loved: Open your heart to healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Freedom isn't just about escaping abuse. It's about rediscovering your voice, your strength, and your faith. This Fourth of July, let's celebrate the true freedom we have in Christ – the freedom to be whole, to be loved, and to be the woman God created you to be. You are a beloved child of God.

When you are ready, let the Oasis Bible Study online support classes empower you with the truth about abuse and God's Word.
